The Staples Advantage Workplace Index: Measuring Workplace Trends and Work Culture

While more than half of employees report feeling overworked and even burnt out, the overwhelming majority (86 percent) of workers remain happy at their jobs and motivated to rise in their organization.

These are some of the key takeaways from the inaugural Staples Business Advantage Workplace Index, a comprehensive report on workplace trends and productivity in the work environment.

Based on a survey of thousands of workers and managers across the US, the inaugural Staples Business Advantage Workplace Index details a professional environment that continually asks employees do more with less. “It’s not a surprise that employees are feeling overworked and burnt out,” says expert Dan Schawbel of and managing partner of Millennial Branding. “Businesses nationwide are tasked to do more with less, so while many workers are still happy at work, employers need to adjust to win the war for talent and optimize productivity, engagement and loyalty with employees.”

The Workplace Index benchmarks numerous workplace trends such as worker satisfaction and productivity while also providing insights on what employers can do to make employees feel more positive about their workplace.

Among the findings included in the full report:

  • Nearly four out of 10 employees acknowledge that burnout is a motivator for a new job search
  • Breaks are becoming rare with about half of employees saying they don’t feel like they can get up for a break at all
  • About half of employees say they receive too much email and the result is lower workplace productivity
  • 49 percent of respondents say decreasing workload or providing more time to complete tasks would minimize work burnout
  • 37 percent of workers say more workplace flexibility would make them more productive
